I could definitely understand that desire. Her husband is away at war and her main concern is keeping her child safe. This is probably because she was a wife and mother.

Maybe it was because the book is full of hope, heroism, and love. There is enough sadness in real life! But, for some reason, this book really pulled me in. Usually, I don’t enjoy reading books that make me feel sad. I will admit that I teared up several times while reading. How each of them chooses to deal with this harsh reality, and their relationship with each other, is the essence of the book. It is the story of two sisters, Vianne and Isabelle, with two entirely different personalities coming of age during the time of Germany’s occupation of France in World War II.

Some of these women paid the ultimate price for their heroism. Her research led her to other women who did heroic work during this time period. Kristin Hannah got the idea for the story after reading about a young Belgian woman who created an escape route out of France during the German occupation. Books that I think about long after I have finished reading them, and I can’t wait to read them again.

5 stars – This will be reserved for the books that I believe are the best of the best.

3 stars – I found the book enjoyable and worth reading.

I probably have no desire to read it again in the future. (Hopefully, there won’t be many of these!)

1 star – I did not enjoy the book at all and I would not recommend it.

This is what each rating will mean to me: Trying to keep in mind that I naturally enjoy some genres better than I do others. Therefore, I am going to try to rate books on their own merit. I think both of those books deserve 5 stars! However, if I had to choose only one to read for the rest of my life it would probably be Pride and Prejudice. How can you compare Pride and Prejudice to Ender’s Game for example? You can’t!! I think my problem lies in trying to compare books. However, starting today, I am going to try to get past this. In fact, I haven’t rated many books on Goodreads because I find it so difficult. Star ratings have always been a tough one for me.
